Fresh graduates from UMCAT School of journalism mass communication and business studies have been advised to ensure that they work professionally in their different fields and embrace digital media as they move out after graduation.

The advice was given by Joseph Elunya, the Principal at UMCAT during the 14th graduation in UMCAT main campus in Kampala, under the theme consolidating multimedia training for socio-economic transformation on 20th December 2022.

“Most audiences are going digital as traditional media is under siege, with the rate at which the media world today is shifting, opt for many new channels for storytelling and you must be courageous to experiment, ” he advised.

“Graduation isn’t the end of the tough journey, it is the end of one level and the beginning of another tougher one but there is a lot of adventure that awaits you, adventure and is often clouded with uncertainty but the beauty about adventure is that when you move it with a positive attitude, you will enjoy and push you to success,” Charles Ogwel the director of UMCAT institute said to those graduating.

“Before, we had more men in journalism than women, UMCAT undertook a deliberate initiative to increase enrollment of women into journalism and media training to date we have managed to balance the equation as in the last year’s graduation, out of 230 candidates who graduated,119 were female representing 51% and 111 were male accounting for 49% respectively of the total number of graduates then in this specific ceremony, where 298 are graduating,150 are females which is about 50.3% of the total and 148 are males representing 49.7% respectively,” he added.

Chris Baryomunsi, Minister for ICT and National Guidance who was the chief guest called upon law enforcement officers to respect the work of journalists while on duty instead of clashing with them calling for harmonious working relationship between the two as all are doing public duty.

A total of about 297 students successfully completed and met the requirements for the award of respective programs at UMCAT school of journalism and mass communication in the 14th graduation ceremony.

The function was graced by cultural dance and performance from gospel singer Wilson Bugembe.
