Authorities of Lwalera government-aided primary school located at Bungokho sub-county in Mbale district have temporarily closed the school after heavy storms destroyed the school.
It was reported that heavy rains came on Wednesday afternoon, 4th October 2023 while most pupils were in class learning, and within no time they saw the rooftop of the school block being carried off.
This interrupted the learning and both teachers and pupils had to run for their lives leaving behind their books and school bags.
Ronnie Kalemba, one of the pupils got some minor injuries as they tried to run for their lives. He said that all their books and pens were washed away by the rains.
Isaac Mukamba, one of the teachers of the school said that all pupils have been sent back home after all classrooms were unroofed.
The Headmistress of the school, Wazamba Robina noted that the most affected classrooms are P.4 to P. 7.
She says that the school has around 729 pupils but it is now only the Primary seven and Six pupils studying while the rest have been sent home.
She urged the government and stakeholders to come in and support them such that they construct new class rooms.
Lydia Musungu, the DEO of Mbale District confirmed the incident and saying that since the rains started last month, 3 schools have had their roofs blown off but have not been replaced because they have no money.
