The number of bodies which have been discovered at Sebei region during the weekend land slide has hit 19 as more still missing.

The landslides, which occurred between October 30 and November 1, 2025, followed days of torrential rainfall that pounded the Elgon highlands, triggering massive soil movements across steep slopes.

A devastating mudslide occurred on November 1 Saturday, 2025, in Kwanwa Village, Kapteka Parish, Chesower Sub-counties at Bukwo and Kapchrowa  Districts, following days of heavy rainfall.

The disaster has claimed an unknown number of lives, with 19   bodies retrieved so far and more 10 people estimated buried under the debris.

Rescue efforts are ongoing and over 10 individuals rescued and receiving medical treatment at a nearby health facility. The bodies of the deceased have been taken to Kapchorwa Mortuary for post-mortem examination.

According to Fredrick Chesang, the Sipi police spokesperson, the road connecting Bukwo District to Kapchorwa District has been blocked due to the accumulation of heavy soil and stones, with efforts underway by the police and district authorities to clear the obstruction.

“We urge the public to vacate areas prone to landslides during this period of heavy rainfall to prevent further casualties,” said SP Chesang. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

This incident comes as no surprise, given the recent heavy rainfall in the region, which has caused widespread flooding and landslides. A few days back, nine people were feared dead in Kapchorwa and Bukwo districts due to similar mudslides.
