The Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety in the Uganda Police Force has issued 11 tough rules ahead of the X-mas festive season.

Speaking to the media on Monday, 15th December, 2025, SP Kananura Michael, the Public Relations officer of the Directorate, says in order to reduce accidents police will arrest any motorist who will defy the rules.

The operations to enforce the rules, code-named “Arrive Alive,” are being conducted countrywide to curb road crashes and enforce compliance with traffic laws.

He named them as; Buses traveling distances of over 300 kilometers must not undertake return journeys within 24 hours.

Only buses with valid route charts and PSV licences will be allowed to operate.

All drivers must possess valid driving licences, and bus drivers must have driver badges at all times while driving.

A clear photo of the driver must be displayed inside the bus.

School buses and unauthorized private vehicles shall not be allowed to operate as passenger service vehicles.

All vehicles must be in good mechanical condition, including proper tire pressure, functional brakes, and adequate lighting.

Motorists must adhere to speed limits, especially in areas with high pedestrian activity.

Drivers must avoid overtaking in risky areas such as hills, corners, and busy sections of the road.

The use of mobile phones while driving and other distractions must be avoided.

Seatbelts must be worn, and all motorcyclists and their passengers must wear helmets and adhere to all other traffic rules and regulations

Do not drink and drive.

Kananura warns that failure to comply with these directives will result in arrest and further legal action.

Similarly, Kananura says police has arrested 644 drivers for various traffic offences last week alone.

These violated traffic regulations such as;  operating vehicles in dangerous mechanical conditions, reckless driving, including speeding and reckless overtaking, illegal vehicle modifications and driving under the influence of alcohol.

Other offences included; driving without valid licences, dangerous loading, abandoned vehicles and carrying passengers in dangerous positions.
