The government of Kenya has declared tomorrow, Friday, 21st April, 2023 a public holiday to mark Idd-ul-Fitr.

The declaration was pronounced by the Cabinet Secretary for Interior & National Administration, Kithure Kindiki in the National Gazzette dated 19th April, 2023.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 2 (1) of the Public Holidays Act, I declare Friday, 21st April, 2023, shall be a public holiday to mark Idd-ul-Fitr,” Kindiki wrote.

The Festival of Breaking Fast; Idd-ul-Fitr, is an important religious celebration for Muslims worldwide. It marks the end of the dawn-to-dusk fast during the Holy month of Ramadan,” he said adding that, “As we end the fast on Friday, the 21st, may our temptations, trials and tribulations also come to an end. Happy Idd-ul-Fitr!”

Eid al-Fitr is Holiday of Breaking the Fast’, and is the earlier of the two official holidays celebrated within Islam (the other being Eid al-Adha). The religious holiday is celebrated by Muslims worldwide because it marks the end of the month-long dawn-to-sunset fasting of Ramadan.

It falls on the first day of Shawwal in the Islamic calendar; this does not always fall on the same Gregorian day, as the start of any lunar Hijri month varies based on when the new moon is sighted by local religious authorities.
