Oxfam Uganda in partnership with Catholic Relief Services And Red Cross have commissioned a warehouse which is going to be used to store non-food relief items for people from Elgon region hit by disasters.
The Warehouse commissioned on Wednesday, 24th July, 2024 is built at the Mbale Red Cross branch office located at Industrial city division in Mbale city and will serve five districts of Mbale, Bududa, Namisindwa, Sironko and Butaleja.
While speaking during the opening of the warehouse, Jimmy Ogwang who represented the Commissioner from the Prime Minister’s Office says that this is the 7th warehouse constructed in the country.
He says that Development partners are helping government to establish such warehouses in all disaster risk regions.
Ogwang revealed that government already has in store relief items like Jerry cans, gumboots, wheelbarrows, tarpaulins among other relief items which will be supplied immediately to people in case disasters hit.
He adds that the government has been delaying to respond to disaster victims because they take a long time to receive information but that since warehouses have been established at all disaster prone regions, their response will now be quicker.
Edward Mwebaze, who represented the Country Director Oxfam said that the warehouse cost 1.7 million Euros for construction.
He says that establishing warehouse at Elgon region was a deliberate move due to continuous disasters in districts like Bududa, Namisindwa among others.
Julie Namara, the Namisindwa deputy resident district commissioner urged people in Bugisu region to own the warehouse saying it’s going to help them during disaster time.
