Tensions flared in Loco Village, Jinja City, during the NRM mayoral primaries campaigns as violence broke out between rival camps. Supporters of Mr. Faruwa Kitakule allegedly attacked the campaign team of Mr. Rogers Egesa Anjoga during a canvassing drive, sparking chaos ahead of Thursday’s polls.

The clashes occurred on July 22 around 5:00 PM in Loco Cell, Southern Division, Jinja City, as both candidates sought support for the Jinja City Southern Division mayoral seat.

According to SP James Mubi, the Kiira Region Police Spokesperson, a joint security team swiftly responded and managed to contain the escalating violence. Thirteen individuals sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment at Jinja Main Hospital.

Six suspects have been arrested in connection with the violence on charges of assault and malicious damage to property. Police confirmed that a Tuk Tuk was set ablaze and the windshields of a motor vehicle were smashed during the altercations.

The Regional Police Commander (RPC) Kiira Region, SSP Charles Nsaba, has called for a harmonization meeting between the candidates and their supporters ahead of the primaries to foster peace.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC) for Jinja Southern Division, Mr. Martin Kasonzi, strongly condemned the violence. He warned candidates and their supporters against inciting attacks, emphasizing that Uganda is a democratic country where leaders are free to contest without intimidation or violence.

It should be noted that the clashes erupted as the two groups were concluding their campaign rallies in the area and encountered each other, which unfortunately led to a violent confrontation.
