The Ministry of Works and Transport, together with joint security agencies, has conducted an operation to evict car bonds operating within the road reserve along the Nakawa-Ntinda corridor.
The eviction that took place today, Monday, May 18, 2026 was superintended by dozens of police and UPDF soldiers deployed in Kyambogo and Banda along Jinja Road.
The operation follows several warnings from the Ministry of Transport and KCCA that the car bond operators remove structures illegally set up within the Kampala-Jinja Highway road reserve.
The operation started before the afternoon downpour and was still ongoing by 1pm, under the supervision of the Ministry of Works and Transport.
After the eviction of vehicles from various car bonds along the Nakawa-Ntinda corridor, the Ministry of Works and Transport commenced demarcation of the road reserve along the stretch.
According to Allan Ssempebwa, Head of Communications at the ministry, several notices had been issued to operators to vacate the road reserve, but they reportedly failed to comply.
Ministry of Works says, following a recent directive of the Minister of State for Works & Transport [Works], Hon. Musa Ecweru, enforcement operations to clear encroachment along the Nakawa–Kireka–Banda section commenced on Monday morning
“Our teams supported by security agencies, are undertaking compliance operations to restore and protect the road reserve and pedestrian walkways from illegal occupation and trading activities,” says the Ministry in a statement
The exercise is intended to improve road safety, mobility and drainage management along the corridor and safeguarding the right of way for the forthcoming Kampala–Jinja Expressway [KJE] project, whose preparatory processes are in advanced stages.
Meanwhile, the affected car dealers say they are willing to vacate the premises, provided the enforcement exercise is conducted fairly and without selective application.
