MOROTO

Communities in Kothroi, Tapach sub county Moroto district trek for over 14 km in search of safe drinking water as cement factory looks on.

According to concerned individuals, they said, residents of Kothroi and nearby villages toil harder to fetch water from the nearby villages, they say, locals walk for over fourteen kilo-meters to access safe water most especially at Katikekile village.

Joseph Acila, a concerned community member said, Tororo cement factory limited promised to drill two boreholes within Kothroi in order to cheapen ways of accessing safe drinking water.

He added that, this has taken long without them seeing any developments in the area in relation to safe water and yet the company supplies company workers with safe water by a truck.

Meanwhile, Charles Emokol the acting manager Tororo cement however, said, the company has tried its level best to bring water closer to the community through drilling of boreholes but due to the state of the soils in the area, this is taking longer.

Emokol added that, a team recently came from Moroto District local government to survey places where boreholes are supposed to be drilled.

The company spent over 50m on the rehabilitation of two boreholes in Kothroi but all couldn’t yield anything positive, Emokol lamented.

The company therefore, has offered one truck to supply water to the locals in Kothroi without any penny, Emokol reacted.

Achila therefore, pleaded with government to get for them accessible clean water within the locality since the company they trust has failed to help them access safe drinking water.

However, Tororo cement factory has been in Mororto for over 20 years mining limestone in Kothroi, Tapach sub county Mororto district.
