Opposition National Unity Platform party on 19th May,2026 endorsed Jinja South East MP Paul Mwiru as its candidate for Speaker of Parliament.
Speaking at a press briefing at the party headquarters at Kavule, the party’s Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya criticized what he described as growing external influence in parliamentary affairs, arguing that Parliament has gradually lost its constitutional autonomy.
Rubongoya said that NUP believes that electing Mwiru as Speaker of the 12th parliament would help address concerns around corruption, political interference, and institutional weakening within Parliament.
The party expressed confidence in Mwiru’s leadership and pledged to mobilize support for his candidature ahead of the upcoming speakership race.
Paul Mwiru in his acceptance speech said that as the 12th parliament starts on 25th May,2026 and considering the numerous lessons learnt from the previous parliament, the choice of speakership is a matter that should interest all Ugandans.
“As the chief custodian of the rules and privileges of members, speakership requires an experienced, exemplary, and patriotic Ugandans like myself” Said Mwiru.
He emphasized that Parliament is a key institution mandated to oversee the Executive, enact laws, and safeguard the rule of law on behalf of Ugandans and hence needs a competent person like him.
